Call for Papers

Symposium on Virtual Environments for Manufacturing

International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition

November 14-19, 1999

Nashville, Tennessee

Objectives and Scope

Virtual Manufacturing broadly refers to the modeling of manufacturing systems and components with effective use of audio-visual and/or other sensory features to simulate or design alternatives for an actual manufacturing environment mainly through effective use of computers. The motivation is to enhance our ability to predict potential problems and inefficiencies in product functionality and manufacturability before real manufacturing occurs. Papers are solicited on, but not limited to the following topics:

  • Product design and virtual prototyping
  • Telepresence and telecollaboration using virtual environments
  • Layout, material handling and applications in a virtual factory
  • Manufacturing education and training using virtual environment
  • Physics based simulation of virtual manufacturing processes
  • Virtual environment based execution of agile manufacturing;
  • Volumetric visualization applications in manufacturing;
  • Distribution and logistics systems design using virtual environments.
  • Industrial implementation of virtual reality
  • Web and collaborative virtual environments

    What to Submit

    Authors are required to submit six copies of the full manuscript to one of the organizers listed below. It must be clearly indicated whether the manuscript should be simultaneously considered for publication in the Transactions of ASME, Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering.

    Important Dates

  • Papers for Journal publication and the symposium shall be submitted by February, 1 1999. (sorry deadline is past, but do consider the IVR 99 for paper submission).
  • Authors will be notified of acceptance by May 25, 1999.
  • Camera-ready mats are due June 25, 1999. Instructions and author kit can be found here.

    Note

    If you are planning to submit your paper to the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, please forward a copy of your paper directly to the journal Editor, Prof. Shiv Kapoor, University of Illinois, Dept. of M&IE, Room 140 MEB, 1206 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801-2906. For more information and updates see
